Karl back in Anadyr

On the 15th August, after several days waiting in Nome, Karl managed to get on a flight back to Anadyr in Russia. After just a bit of fuss he was cleared by Customs and will be staying in the accommodation where he and Dimitri stayed last time while waiting for the next flight up to Egvekinot. This being the town he reached on the last phase of the trek, Karl, (who will be on his own again from this point on), can then start walking from there. As there are no roads and its summer Karl can use neither his trailer nor sled so will have to backpack all of his equipment across country. With the great distances involved, his dehydrated rations will have to be sent ahead to towns along the route. Karl hopes to make 800 miles on this next leg before he will need to renew his visa and special permits once again and is forced to leave Russia. Unfortunate, but a fact of life we’re afraid.

At last - another small step for Karl (*only* 800 miles). By the time he’s done this one it should be Winter again, so maybe back to the sled and skis (or not - yet another wait for geopolitics to catch up with indidvidual endeavour ?). At this rate I make it 9 years to the Channel, 18 in total, around 15.5 on the road/ice/trail/sand/swamp. Amazing.

Finally something new happens. Can you post a small map of the planned route when possible?

What’s the problem with Russia to give Karl at least one year visa? This I will never understand.

Anyway good luck for the next step! Keep the updates coming.

Just to put you in the picture regarding the visa and permit. Karl did get a one-year visa which started when he went back on last occasion ie in March of this year. So he’s still running on the same visa. As for the permits the best you can do with them is get a two or six-month permit, so now he has a six-months at the most and will obviously have to renew his visa when he applies for new permits. You have to remember what area we are talking about, this is the way it works.

Keith, Karl - STOICISM is redefined!

There are many people and a huge worldly WILL out there - Hull is only a few paces away.
If you can beat the Beiring straits I’m sure you can Roger the Russians.
Focus on the Guildhall, Queens Gardens, Hessle, Anlaby and Beverley Road
    See you soon - Trooper

Thanks Keith for explaining about visas and permits; worse than I thought, indeed. Karl and you all are once again doing an amazing job just to keep up with all that bureaucracy.

Let us know how Karl is doing and when he starts his walk from Egvekinot.
