Karl back on the ground by mid to late February

The last update stated that Karl anticipated returning to Russia around the start of January 2007. Unfortunately, and almost inevitably, there have been problems in obtaining the special permits required for the Chukotka region of Siberia. However, things do now seem to be moving on that front, although it will still be mid to late February at the earliest before Karl can get back onto the ground. It was decided that Karl will walk the next leg with Dimitri Kieffer, his companion on the Bering Straits crossing. Dimitri is planning to walk that route anyway and then cycle across Russia. Walking together they will be able to share the substantial costs for this leg. Starting later in the year may necessitate a change of route and although a number of routes have been planned it is not clear which one will be used at this point. Once they have a date for the return it will be posted here, so keep an eye on this space.

    Karl,
Helen and I were watching (glued to) the TV last night, words fail us as to how anyone could achieve what you have done…what drives a man to go through this?
The strength and courage you have shown is immeasurable.
Where do you get your stamina? Seeing the footage of you and Dimitri dragging the sleds(soon to be one) hopelessly North instead of West by the strong currents in a enormous slush puppy sleighride, how could you both keep finding the energy to pull those carts up over those bergs ???

We shall watch you until the end Karl, SUPERB SUPERMAN !

Well, It’s the middle of March and I see you have come to your senses. Too many years spent wearing your body out for nothing in my opinion. I too have spent years exploring the world, sometimes walking long vast stretches of it. But I tried not to fixate and turn it into something grander than it was. Life is a journey whether or not you are on some self defined trek. I would caution you against spending all your youth being fixated and stuborn. There is much more to life than just walking across strange ground you can’t call home. Of course, if you are simple minded and believe that is the best you can do with your life, then please accept my apologies. We will all answer for how we spent our time on earth (personal belief). Pete
