The last 55 miles to Wales

6th March 2006

There was a delay last month when Karl and Dimitri had to wait at Teller School and then Brevig Mission School for Dimitris sled to be flown out from Nome. However, they eventually set off to cover the last 55 miles to Wales on the 17th February. Travelling initially around the coastal sea ice, it then became far too broken and they were forced inland to take a route over the mountain’s. They eventually arrived in Wales on 21st February. Though Dimitri will lose the end of the frost bitten finger, it will not hold up his attempt at the crossing. There is now much to do repairing and preparing equipment, however, if the weather and dynamics permit, they will attempt a crossing hopefully before 15th March.

Good luck with the ice crossing. At least here in Helsinki, the ice is pretty strong at the moment, as it’s been pretty cold, so I hope you’ve got the same conditions.

    Karl,

I am following your progress almost daily now as you prepare for your historic crossing.

I look forward to receiving an update from Russia.

    Good luck to you both.
