Managed to make 5 miles westwards

 22nd March 2006

Though it had been extremely hard work, Karl and Dmitri had managed to make 5 miles westwards yesterday. The weather is good at present, though very cold, and wanting to make hay while the sun shines they will hopefully make another five miles to the west today. In today’s satellite photograph the ice ahead of Karl looks quite good, i.e. no large areas of water. At that end the ice around Karl is pretty varied. It is all hard going, however, there have been some patches where it’s been possible to bash on and make some distance. At other times, it’s taken them up to quarter-of-an-hour just to get over one obstacle. They have proof now that they are not alone out there as they have spotted fresh bear tracks a couple of times.

I live in NW Alaska, just north of the Bering Straits. I’m curious to know whether they are carrying a shotgun in case of pesky bears.
