A minor drama
25th March 2006
Well, they’re still there and still at it! Because the ice was so broken they only managed three miles or so yesterday and not as far as they’d hoped, but at least it was in the right direction. They didn’t in fact it make it to the International Date Line, but were only about 800 metres short. I spoke to Karl at 09:00 (Alaska) today (Sat) and there are no major problems. They simply aim to keep pushing west as best possible. The weather still remains good, the temperature acceptable, with very little ice drift just at the moment. Both have colds at present and we can only hope that these will pass within a short period as things are tough enough as it is without having to do it feeling under the weather.
A minor drama arose at 05:00 this morning when the ice started breaking up and parting under their tent. They had to move quite sharply to shift it to more stable ice before the lot disappeared.
