A boost that they really needed!

27th March 2006
Sunday was a good day for Karl and Dimitri. They managed to get another 6.58 miles in a westerly direction, taking them over 120 miles in total, (and remember that’s being measured in straight lines, so you can add some mileage on top). Part of the reason for this good distance was the fact that the weather changed drastically. Although it remained clear, the temperature rose to what Karl described as ‘warm’. He said for the first time they could actually feel the heat of the sun - although it didn’t seem to affect the condition of the ice. To such an extent in fact that they were walking in T-shirts, without their hats and gloves. It was a boost that they really needed. It would appear that the weather is going to be the same today (Monday) and consequently they were keen to get off this morning and take full advantage of their good luck.

The latest satellite photos indicate that the mass of ice has shifted westwards, and is being pushed into the north eastern shore of Russia, which is exactly what K and D require. Just at present there is not a great deal of open water to their front and they have been walking without their immersion suits.

Keith and Andy - I trust that some of these messages (I hate ‘blogs’?!) are reaching Karl and Dimitri

My heart has been in my mouth for the last few days - and then to hear that they are being ‘rewarded’ with a bit some improved conditions and they are making REAL progress to terra firma - JUST BRILLIANT news.

((Am I missing something here - or nobody else watching them? - why so few comments here? - is there another website with crowd of supporters?))

Some people may be asking why - I’m replying - WHO CARES WHY! - HAVE YOU SEEN WHERE THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE ACHIEVING!!

    Faaaaaaaantastic spirit.

I hope they’ve got plenty of Lemsip with them [Developed in Hull (by my father) at Reckitts!]

To Karl and Dmitri - go for it guys, we’re checking daily for reports. To think that five or six miles net gain in a day is considered good - I can’t conceive how tough it must be out there.

    Best wishes

We here in Wales, Alaska USA are also watching intently, as this was the last place Karl and Dimitri were before venturing out into the Strait.

To those that do not live in this area, you may not understand the weather they have had since leaving has been unusual. It is as though Mother Nature has also given Her sign of approval for them to make it.

There are typically one storm after another as the sun stays up longer and warms the cold.

    God speed.

This has been a nail biter!

I can’t wait until they are safely across.

They are walking in t-shirts and no hats? It isn’t THAT warm! I read the weather reports.
