Making his way around the coast to Nome, Alaska

1 January 2006
After sending ahead all that equipment which would be required for when Dimitri joins him in Nome and also that required for the Bering Straits crossing, Karl finally set off from Unalakleet on 29th December. He is making his way around the coast to Nome. He had hoped to cut off a good portion of the journey by walking over the sea ice in Norton Bay. Unfortunately, it would appear that there are large areas of open water in the bay and therefore Karl is having to stick to the coastline. On 31st December he reached Shaktoolik and stated that the winds had been terrible, giving him the worst day he could remember in a long while.
